Chat GPT vs. The Human World!
If you’ve been living on another planet there is a tiny remote chance you’ve not heard of Chat GPT AI. If you have, welcome back and let me elaborate on what Chat GPT is.
Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT) is a groundbreaking large language artificial intelligence (AI) platform based on Chat GPT 4 architecture. It was released to the public in November 2022, and it is fair to say it has taken the world by storm.
Its creators OpenAI, have trained, not programmed Chat GPT, with website resources up until January 2022, classic literature, textbooks, translations, essays and other information. It can perform a variety of tasks including writing content, auditing code, analysing data, conducting research and perform as a customer service chatbot.
It has a comprehensive array of plugins that give the AI more functionality.
As someone who writes for a living, I have a few thoughts about Chat GPT ‘s copywriting and content creation capabilities. And I’m going to share them with you now.
Is Chat GPT Any Good at Content Creation?
I have to say that overall, it is good at generating content. If you’re as old as me, you were around at the birth of Web 2.0 and quite possibly owned a Blackberry smartphone. You may also remember that you could purchase software to create copy. This machine driven content was proper rubbish. It was obvious that the content was written by a machine and not a human, and it soon faded into obscurity.
Chat GPT, however, is generations ahead of these early machine content generators. Believe it or not, it creates readable English, and providing you give it a good prompt, it will deliver a decent result most of the time.
It works by interpreting the prompt and then researches the web and its database to write the content like a human copywriter. Where it is limited, is that it doesn’t have a creative spark like us mere flesh and blood mortals. That is the key difference between AI and human writing.
As I’ve been in the copywriting game since 2008 I often recognise my own work in its writing. A bitter man would be annoyed…
The other aspect I want to draw attention to is that it does have flaws or limitations if you will. Let’s explore these in more depth.
Limitations of Chat GPT Copywriting
Right now, here are my issues with Chat GPT copywriting:
• Flowery/Elaborate language: Chat GPT’s use of language is very elaborate, and it gets fixated on certain words. “Elevate”, “transformative” and “meticulously” are three words that it seems to love and they appear time and time again. There are others too.
• It seems to get stuck in a groove: I’ve noticed that using it continuously for say an hour and you get little variation in what it delivers. To me, it seems to think that all the prompts are connected. When this happens, I use a new chat.
• Sometimes it fails to grasp the brief/prompt: When this happens, I’ve found that changing the brief doesn’t always end in a positive result. As such, I often find myself writing copy and asking it to improve it on these occasions.
• Word count: Although I’ve specified in preferences that it needs to pay attention to maximum and minimum word counts, it is very hit and miss in this regard. I really wish it could count!
• Accuracy: Chat GPT isn’t always accurate, and you need to check any information it provides or cites.
• Not great with tone: If you ask it to create content in one tone of voice and then another what you get back is often the same or similar. I think this is connected to it getting stuck in a groove which I referred to earlier.
Plagiarism
Some of the copy it generates does fall foul of plagiarism checkers. That said, the worst it has ever been for me is 13% plagiarised content. It is no big deal and easily corrected, but nonetheless, it is something to be aware of.
How I Use Chat GPT
One aspect where Chat GPT helps me do my job is that I often ask it to ‘improve’ my own copy. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, but it does let me cherry pick the best of my own and AI copy.
It is also good for research. If I’m looking for scientific or medical research, I use the ScholarAI plugin to find the information that I want. It finds the information in seconds and provides links so I can review it. It is a great time saver.
If I’m stuck for content ideas or struggling with my approach to a writing task, I’ll ask Chat GPT to write the content. I find this gets my grey matter firing on all cylinders and from here I can write the content and develop ideas.
Time is Money
Chat GPT’s true strength is that it can provide high quality content quickly and anything that saves time makes you more productive.
If you have an online business Chat GPT could be a great copilot and a time saver. It could be the ace in the hole you need.
AI is now in the world for better or worse, and I’ve decided to seize the technology with both hands and perhaps that’s the secret to redefining ourselves as AI tech rollout ramps up.
